The Future of Digital Identity

This research project explores how digital identity in Switzerland could evolve by 2030, focusing on the introduction of the state-operated E-ID and the broader technological, political, and social forces shaping its future. The project analyzes trends such as cybersecurity, AI-driven verification, public trust, and international interoperability with systems like the EU Digital Identity Wallet.

Using a foresight methodology, the project examines current developments, evaluates key influencing factors, and develops four future scenarios that illustrate possible outcomes for digital identity in Switzerland. The work highlights how trust, usability, and governance will play a critical role in determining whether digital identity becomes widely adopted or remains controversial.
